Bradley Wilcoxon: Nexus-7 Krate Repop Conversion
The buzz started in '98, that Schwinn was re-issuing their legendary Krate. Many were disappointed to learn that the new repops only came equipped with single-speed coaster-braked rear hubs, and unbraked fronts. Among the disapointees was Bradley Wilcoxon, who got one for his son. Here is his take, and his solution.

"I for one was really disappointed with Schwinn for re-issuing a neutered version of a classic bike. What kid wants to ride a coaster bike? With all the cool new stuff being produced, I think they could have come up with something out of their parts bins to produce a new take on a old classic. I hope you are paying attention Schwinn; It worked at Ford (T-bird)".

Repop
Are you feeling somewhat emasculated on the new coaster krate you own.? Try this steroid infusion. Lace in a Nexus 7-speed internal drive hub with disc brake. This gives you more gears than the original and also resolves the problem of no rear brake mounting strap found on the new krates. The frame needs to be spread about 1/2 inch & the chain needs to be lengthened by about 2 links. Use a thumb
click shift mounted on the handlebar. I used a set of  Weinman brake handles  and an Atom wheel on the front to give it a modern/ retro look. You will need to drill out the dimple located on the lower left of the front fork to accomodate the brake stop nut. The cables are routed down the lower frame tube, and the rear chainguard mount was moved inside to help with pedal clearance. The repop Manta-Ray seat was added for some extra flair. I used a S2 /20" rear rim to match the front rim, although the newer rim could be used as well. It's not an original, but it looks/runs new & sure beats a coaster bike.
