The black bike is the front half of a girls the back half of a boys with 2 steel bars welded in to lengthen the frame. The red one is a Schwinn Delux Twin 2 seater. The engine on both bikes is a WeedEater-brand superblower engine 32 cc. $79.00 at Walmart.
My engine mount method consists of 4 basic pieces. 1st is the base plate (1/4 alum plate) which connects to the bike with a
door hinge. This is the clutch. The weight of the assembly should equal the spring tension. 2nd piece is the engine mount plate which is 1/8 alum sheet bent 90 deg and connects the engine
to the frame. 3rd is the steel knurled 1" dia drive shaft that is machined to accept a 101 ss sealed roller bearing on the far end of the shaft from the motor. 4th is the bearing block,a 3/4 alum plate that holds the bearing on the shaft and bolts to the base plate. Take care not to warp the hinge when mounting on the bike or the clutch won't work. The controls are motorcycle levers and throttle, with bicycle cables. I have been using a marine boat cable for the clutch but it is expensive. I also have 2 Huffy Santa Fe Cruisers one with this engine setup and one with a 4 stroke Ryobi 26cc using a CARR Precision engine mount system.
I have another recumbent like the black chopper same extension but it uses 26" wheels instead of a small front wheel. The motor is mounted with the hinge method but it is a 28cc Mcculloh(sp).
In work is an E-BIKE we are going to use another RYOBI 4 stroke and the CARR Precision mounting method. The hinge
mount method is the easiest, cheapest, and most dependable mounting method I can come up with. Just pedal and dump the clutch. The boys have crashed many times and only once did I have to re-align the motor after a serious crash. I had to tap the hinge back in line with the rear wheel with a hammer. They are easy to service also. Just knock out the hinge pin and the whole assembly comes off the bike.
Rusty's Rules of bicycle cool:
1. The lower your ass is to the ground the cooller you are.
2. Take away points if you can't ride the bike any more, like
the lowrider show bikes.
3. Take away coolness if you have more than 2 wheels. Some
3-wheelers are lower to the ground, but only half as cool.
4. Motorized is the coolest of the cool, especially if the setup
is home-made and works well.
5. If bikinis on babes riding the motorized recumbents calls for
a photo shoot, let me know when you are ready!!!!
